Britain’s Got Talent presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly have opened up in a new interview, revealing that they almost split in the aftermath of Ant’s drink driving conviction.

Ant was found to be over the limit after a car crash in March 2018 and received a 20-month driving ban and £86,000 fine after pleading guilty to drink driving in court.

He then entered rehab and took a break from showbiz, which meant Dec had to present last year’s BGT live shows alone before This Morning host Holly Willoughby joined him for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here.

Explaining his reaction to the crash, Dec called Ant’s incident ‘indefensible’.

“I wanted to punch him and I wanted to hug him at the same time – and I didn’t know which one I wanted to do first,” Dec told The Guardian’s Weekend magazine.

He confessed that he ‘would be lying’ if he said he didn’t think about splitting from his presenting partner.

“Ant went away, and he had a lot of work to do on himself. He had a lot of thinking to do. Equally, I did. I thought about every eventuality and every permutation,” he added.

Dec eventually decided not to part ways with Ant, saying, “Ultimately, the number one thing I wanted to happen was that Ant came back and he was healthy and happy, and we got our relationship back on track and we carried on. That’s the thing that makes me the happiest, working together.”

Revealing that he needed therapy in the aftermath of the incident, Dec said, “I’m not too proud to say I sought help when Ant was away and throughout Ant going away. It’s the most destabilising thing that has ever happened to me. I had some counselling, and I still do.”

The Geordie pair have now moved on from the incident and reunited earlier this year to film the Britain’s Got Talent auditions. They’ll be back on our screens next month when the talent show returns to ITV.
