Olympic diving pool tested as water turns green
The cause is unknown
The Olympic diving pool in Rio is undergoing tests after the water has changed from a light blue colour to murkey green.
The colour change was noticeable during the Women’s 10m synchronised diving final last night (Tuesday 9th August) but as of yet the cause is still a mystery.
Team GB’s diving star Tom Daley took to Twitter to ask what happened to the pool in which he won a bronze medal with his partner Dan Goodfellow on the previous night.
He wasn’t the only one, viewers who tuned in to watch the Chinese duo claim gold also took to Twitter to ask what the reason was for the colour change.
Olympic organisers have admitted tests were carried out after the change in water colour and there is no risk to athletes.
Canada’s team leader Mitch Geller suspected the cause was algae which multiplied following the day’s warm conditions. He said “I think that the filter is busted, but I’m not sure. It’s not really dangerous. It’s not like it’s toxic or dirty or any of that. It seemed to get worse over the course of the competition.”
Organisers are currently investigating the issue.
