Study finds seven-day social media break led to increased sense of wellbeing

Taking some time away from social media can reduce depression and anxiety, according to new research.
A break of as little as a week has been found to be effective, a study by the University of Bath has found.
People who took seven days away from platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook reported an increased sense of wellbeing.
Anxiety and depression when away from social media
A sample of 154 people aged 18 to 72 were split by researchers into two groups, one group was banned from social media while the other was not.
Participants used social media for an average of eight hours a week.
Those taking part were questioned on their anxiety and depression levels, and their sense of wellbeing, using three recognised tests.
They were asked to rate their level of agreement with statements including "I've been feeling optimistic about the future" and "I've been thinking clearly" to measure wellbeing.
To measure depression, participants were asked questions such as "how often during the past two weeks were you bothered by little interest or pleasure in doing things".
Anxiety was monitored using the General Anxiety Disorder Scale, which asks how frequently a person is bothered by feeling nervous or on edge, or an inability to stop worrying.
‘An improvement in wellbeing’
Those who took a one-week break from social media saw their wellbeing rise from an average of 46 to 55.93 on The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale.
Depression in this group dropped from a level of 7.46 to 4.84 on the Patient Health Questionnaire-8, while anxiety fell from 6.92 to 5.94 on the scale.
Lead author Dr Jeff Lambert, of the university's Department for Health, said the changes represented a moderate improvement to depression and wellbeing, and a small improvement in anxiety.
Dr Lambert said, "Many of our participants reported positive effects from being off social media with improved mood and less anxiety overall.
"This suggests that even just a small break can have an impact."
He added, "Of course, social media is a part of life and for many people, it's an indispensable part of who they are and how they interact with others.
"But if you are spending hours each week scrolling and you feel it is negatively impacting you, it could be worth cutting down on your usage to see if it helps."
How many people use social media in the UK?
The number of UK adults using social media has increased from 45% in 2011 to 71% in 2021, and has reached 97% in people aged 16 to 44, the study revealed.
"Scrolling" through content is the most common activity users perform on social media.
The research findings support previous research in both the US and UK linking regular social media use with higher rates of depression and anxiety.
But it is not established whether social media use leads to mental health problems, or whether pre-existing feelings of low self-worth drives people online as a means of validation, the report said.
Future research: social media and mental health
In future, researchers hope to study the impact of pausing the use social media on specific groups of the population, such as younger people and those with physical and mental health conditions.
They also hope to follow up with people beyond one week, to see if the benefits of the social media break have a lasting effect.
Social media breaks could become one of a package of clinical recommendations to help people manage their mental health, they said.
