M3 closed between Winchester and Basingstoke

Hampshire Police and National Highways are warning drivers that the road is likely to remain partially closed for several hours

Police and National Highways are warning part of the M3 in North Hampshire is likely to be closed for several hours following a serious accident.

It happened early this morning on the London bound side between junction 9 for the A34 near Winchester and junction 8 for the A303 near Basingstoke.

Some drivers have ended up stuck in queues behind the closure.

Officials have been working to free them and allow them to turn round as part of an overall operation to reopen the road to traffic.

Hampshire Police updated statement

We’re still working at the scene of a collision on the M3 which happened at around 6.30am this morning. The northbound carriageway between junctions 9 and 8 are still closed and are expected to remain closed until mid afternoon.

The collision involved a car and a pedestrian. The pedestrian has been taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Diversions are in place but we would urge drivers to avoid the area if they can.

We will update as soon as the road has been re-opened.

A 37-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs. He is currently in police custody.
