An investigation's underway at Burnley FC, after a fan allegedly directed racial abuse towards a Watford FC player during the first half of their EFL Championship match.

The two sides faced off at Turf Moor in Lancashire yesterday (December 21st), with the hosts leaving 2-1 winners.

But the win was soured, as Burnley issued an appeal for witnesses of the incident shortly after the final whistle.

In a statement on their website, the club wrote: "Discrimination has absolutely no place in football or society and we condemn such behaviour in the strongest possible terms.

"The Club is committed to creating an inclusive and respectful environment for everyone involved in the game.

"We are working closely with Watford FC, the match officials and the Police to investigate this matter thoroughly.

"Burnley FC will ensure that those responsible are held accountable. We remain steadfast in our dedication to promoting respect both on and off the pitch."

Watford thanked their opposition via social media platform X.com.

On the Hornets' website, they wrote: "Watford Football Club wishes to place on record its thanks to Burnley Football Club, the match officials and Lancashire Constabulary for their actions in relation to an incident during the first half of today’s game.

"The Hornets join with the Clarets in urging anyone with information relating to the incident to please come forward.

"Watford FC will be offering its fullest support to the player towards whom the alleged abuse was directed."

Tom Cleverley's promotion-play-off bid took a hit, with Watford now sitting in seventh- one place and point outside the top six.

Although they're still unbeaten at their home Vicarage Road this season, their away form's leaves a bit to be desired.

Meanwhile, Burnley sit in third- also a point and place away from Leeds in second- as they look to bounce back to the Premier League on the first time of asking.

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to come forward and assist the investigation by contacting the police directly or the Burnley Fan Experience Team at SLO@burnleyfc.com.
