Angus votes NO

160 Ballot boxes made their way to the Saltire Centre in Arbroath for the Angus count in the Scottish Independence Referendum. As with many of the areas in Scotland, this referendum seemed to be important to Angus residents, with an 85.7% turnout for voting. Comments were made in one of the Polling Stations that after just two hours, more people had cast their vote, than had during the entire voting period at the European Elections.

In total, 80,302 votes were cast in Angus – this verification came through at just after 0130, then the task of actually counting the YES and NO votes took the large team just over an hour and a half to complete. Many may have expected Angus to return a YES vote, given the huge majorities the SNP MSPs had in the last Scottish Parliament elections…however, the people of Angus turned down the idea of an Independent Scotland.

The Angus result, as declared by counting Officer Richard Stiff at 0425 was:
