McGregor targets Rangers cup run

Darren McGregor would love to see Rangers go all the way in the League Cup this season after injury robbed him of his moment of glory previously in the competition.

The defender was at St Mirren when they lifted the trophy in 2013 but he was forced to look on from the sidelines as his team-mates celebrated their triumph.

Having since put his injury problems behind him, he is determined to impress at his new club.

And he wants to help the Light Blues on their way to claiming silverware this season - starting with Tuesday's first round clash against Queen's Park.

McGregor said: It would be an absolute dream to win the cup.

It's something I've not really given a lot of thought to because we are still in the early stages.

But we are definitely looking at trying to do well in all the competitions we participate in. It's baby steps at the moment.

Unfortunately I was injured when St Mirren won the cup so that was tough to take. But it was a great event.

If you can win a cup, it adds to the morale of the whole team.

It was a great lift for the club and provides good memories for the players and the fans.''

Meanwhile, boss Ally McCoist remains hopeful of bolstering his squad further ahead of the transfer deadline.

He is looking to secure at least one other new face, after completing the signing of Lee Robinson.

The former Ibrox goalkeeper has returned to the club until the end of the season as back-up for Steve Simonsen, after first choice Cammy Bell suffered a shoulder injury.

McCoist said: It's a no-brainer for us, with the doubt hanging over Cammy.We certainly couldn't take the chance with just having the one goalie in Simonsen.

We are still working away and really keen to get possibly another addition to the squad.

It would be great, it would give everybody a boost. We are still trying.''

McCoist welcomed news of Lewis Macleod's call-up to the Scotland Under-21s but was disappointed to see Lee Wallace miss out on a place in Gordon Strachan's squad.

He said: I'm delighted for Lewis and not surprised.

We have been delighted with him, he has been performing really well. It's another small step for him.

I'm disappointed for Lee. I don't think he really expected to be named in it but I don't see any reason why he can't fight his way back in.''
