McCoist acknowledges Simonsen error

Rangers manager Ally McCoist admitted goalkeeper Steve Simonsen should have done better for the goal that gave his side a League Cup fright against Queen's Park.

A Kris Boyd headed double earned Gers a 2-1 first-round win but they were made to work for it and Queens were lifted when Simonsen came off his line for a long free-kick but was beaten to the ball by Tony Quinn, who headed a 31st-minute leveller.

Simonsen is deputising for the injured Cammy Bell but might find his place under jeopardy from new signing Lee Robinson.

McCoist said: I'll need to see it again but if Simmo comes he has got to get it. I'm not sure he had to come. In hindsight he should probably have stayed on his line. It's a sore one for him and a sore one for us.''

The Gers boss added: We lost our discipline with the silly free-kicks we were giving away in the first half, it gave them an opportunity to put the ball in the box.

That was a big concern and it turned out to be the case. We didn't defend one at all well and let Queens back into the game.

That said, we started the game really well. Half-time we came in very disappointed but we got the next goal.

There were certainly positives and the biggest one is we have a home tie with Inverness, but there were negatives that we have to address.''

Queen's Park boss Gus MacPherson was proud of his newly-assembled team.

If you look at where these boys have come from, to go out there and compete is a credit to them,'' he said.

A lot of these players have come from juniors and amateurs, teams like Bannockburn and Pollok. They should take a real boost from that.''
