Hamilton boss Martin Canning was happy to see his side at last find fortune in the 4-0 win over Dundee which took them into the Premiership play-off against Dundee United.

The home side started the final league game of the season one point ahead of bottom side Inverness after four straight defeats, the most recent a 3-2 reverse at Ross County in midweek.

Rakish Bingham and Ioannis Skondras scored in a two-minute spell in the first half to put Hamilton in charge against Dundee before Dougie Imrie netted from the spot in the 56th minute and Ali Crawford drove in a fourth to secure their biggest victory of the season.

Hamilton now go to Tannadice on Thursday night for the first leg of their Premiership play-off before the home game next Sunday, while Inverness start next season in the Championship.

Canning, who revealed skipper Michael Devlin will have a scan on a knee injury which forced him off in the first half, was pleased his side got the breaks when it was most needed - but claimed they need not have left themselves in what is still a precarious position.

He said: “It was a similar type of performance as against Ross County on Tuesday but we didn't get the breaks, no luck at all and lost the game

“But today everything went as it should have done. I thought we were excellent.

“It is pleasing to go into the play-off games on the back of two strong performances and a strong result as well.

“It was always going to be a tight league. We were one win away from finishing ninth.

“We have a better goal difference than Motherwell and (would have) more points than Dundee.

“Off the top of my head I can think of five times we should have got the three points and didn't, but I am sure two or three teams could do the same.

“Somebody had to finish bottom, someone had to finish 11th and we need to make sure that we go again

“We have two huge games that I believe we are capable of winning.”

Dundee's interim boss Neil McCann was left embarrassed'' by the defeat with his future unclear.

The Sky Sports pundit, previously a winger for the Taysiders, took over at Dens Park after seven defeats had left them second-bottom and two wins and a draw in his first three games secured safety.

However, following a 2-0 home defeat to Inverness in midweek, Dundee were well off the pace again.

McCann will be in the Sky Sports studio on Sunday for the final Premiership afternoon of the season and for the William Hill Scottish Cup final the following week, as well as the Scotland versus England World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park on June 10.

The former Rangers, Hearts and Scotland player will discuss his future with Sky and Dundee in the coming weeks but he was still raw after his second successive defeat.

He said: “I am embarrassed to be part of it because I am part of it.

“It doesn't sit well with me.

“I have heard loads of people saying 'well done for keeping Dundee up'.

“It is great to come back and keep the club in the Premiership but I didn't enjoy any of the last two games and certainly not that today.

“Sky have been great to allow me to step out of my job and to come and try achieve something with the club.

“I did that after three games with the help of the guys and everyone connected to the club but that hurts a lot.”
