Boss Martin Canning called for Hamilton to be “cuter” following their 6-5 Betfred Cup penalty shoot-out win over Queen of the South at the SuperSeal stadium.

The Group G match ended 1-1 after Accies substitute Steven Boyd's late strike was cancelled out by Stephen Dobbie moments later.

Accies keeper Gary Woods was the hero making three saves to give the Premiership side the bonus point to take them level on points with leaders Queen of the South having played a game less.

Canning, whose side eventually got past East Kilbride last week with a 3-1 win, said: “It is slightly different in terms of what we will come up against in the league in terms of the last two games in the cup have both been teams, well organised and sitting very deep making it difficult for us to break them down.

“Maybe for us we have to be a little bit cuter in terms of how we create opportunities.

“But it isn't easy against a team as well organised with good pros who sit 10 men behind the ball and are forced to try to break them down.”

Doonhamers keeper Alan Martin, formerly of Accies, started by saving from Grant Gillespie and Danny Redmond.

Woods thwarted Lyndon Dykes and John Rankin while Ali Crawford, Georgios Sarris, Rakish Bingham, Boyd and Darian MacKinnon netted for Accies.

Derek Lyle, Dobbie, Kyle Jacobs, Callum Fordyce and Callum Tapping did likewise for the Championship side but after Hamilton substitute David Templeton scored his penalty, Woods blocked Darren Brownlie's attempt.

Queen of the South have lost two penalty shoot-outs in the section - they were ousted by East Kilbride in midweek - and manager Gary Naysmith said:

“We tried it different this week and put our three main penalty takers first and two scored out of the three.

“I suppose it hurts you a wee bit when you are 2-0 up in the shoot-out but you can't blame anybody for missing a penalty.

“There are far better players than our players miss a penalty but we are only on five points and with a bit of luck in the shoot-outs we could have been on seven so it is simple, we need to try to win against Albion Rovers next week.
