Graeme Souness believes the missed opportunity to beat Auld Enemy England will “haunt Scottish people for decades”.

The 114th meeting of international football's oldest rivals was a largely lifeless affair that appeared to be going the visitors' way after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored shortly after coming on at Hampden Park.

But an unremarkable World Cup qualifier ended extraordinarily as Leigh Griffiths followed up a superb free-kick by netting another in the 90th minute to put Gordon Strachan's side on the brink of a famous victory.

There was to be yet another twist in the tale, though, as England captain Harry Kane fired home in stoppage time to break Scottish hearts - a 2-2 draw Souness believes the country will agonise over for years to come.

“We don't beat England very much,” the Scotland great said on Sky Sports.

“That will haunt us for generations. Seriously, for decades that will haunt us.

“We were in that position and I mean there's so much on this qualification, 2-1 up with a minute to go.

“I am telling you, that will haunt Scottish people for decades.”
