Motherwell have lost one of their 'greatest sons' following the death of Joe Wark.

The long-serving former left-back has died aged 67 after suffering from dementia in recent years.

A club statement read: 'Motherwell FC is today devastated to learn of the passing of one of its greatest sons, Joe Wark, after a long battle with illness.'

'Everyone at the club would like to express our deepest condolences to Joe's wife Maureen, along with his close family and friends at this difficult time.'

Wark holds Motherwell's post-war appearances record having turned out 539 times for the club, making his debut in 1968 following a move from Irvine Victoria and playing until 1984. He was never capped for Scotland but did represent the Scottish League against the English League in 1976.

Wark remained a regular and popular visitor to Fir Park following his playing career.
