Canning looking to add to Hamilton's attacking options

Hamilton manager Martin Canning admitted he would be on the lookout for a new striker after his side again failed to finish off their opponents on Saturday.

Accies led 10-man Motherwell until deep into stoppage-time in the Lanarkshire derby but Louis Moult headed an equaliser during some desperate late pressure.

Motherwell were on top before Lee Lucas was sent off in the 27th minute for a two-footed challenge on Massimo Donati and Hamilton had chances to put the game out of sight after Alex D'Acol opened the scoring with a 54th-minute diving header.

The visitors were never out of it, though, and the unmarked Moult headed home Carl McHugh's cross with virtually the last strike of the ball.

Accies stayed in the Premiership bottom two after losing a lead for the 12th time this season and Canning admits they might need a more clinical striker if he can find one. Midfielder Ali Crawford is their top goalscorer with nine goals and D'Acol is the most prolific forward with six.

Canning said: When teams have got players like (Scott) McDonald and Moult, they only need one opportunity.

For us, we seem to need half a dozen opportunities to hit the target. These guys seem to hit the target on a regular basis.

I don't know if that's the level of the player or the quality of the player, or what it is. Day in, day out our guys prove they have the quality but at the minute it's not there on game days.''

When asked about his January transfer window plans, Canning said: The backing is always there from the owners and the chairman, but it's got to be someone we feel can add value to the team.

We are a small club and we can't afford to carry dead wood. We have got to make sure it's someone who can come in and add to the starting 11. There is enough depth in the under-20s that we don't need to rush to bring players in for the sake of it.

It's never easy to try and find these guys in January but that's something we need to look at. We are creating enough opportunities and get into areas that we should be scoring more goals. We do score goals but with the opportunities we create, we should be scoring more.''

Canning will continue talks with left-back Lennard Sowah, whose short-term deal is set to expire. I'm hopeful that he will stay but I think it's going to be a difficult one to do,'' Canning said.

Motherwell celebrated their equaliser like it was a winner and Moult admitted he had rarely enjoyed a goal so much.

The striker said: The feeling of celebrating with the fans was unbelievable. I have never quite had that feeling, everyone jumping up together. It felt like we won. It's a fantastic point with 10 men for so long.

I was in a world of my own jumping up and down. I couldn't tell you what happened. I got a few to the face as well. Everyone was just going mental. It's great for the club, great for the players and great for the fans.''

Moult, who has netted five of his 11 goals against Accies this season, added: I don't know what it was but I had a feeling I was going to score. I knew there was a goal coming and I just kept telling myself that, and it came right at the end. It was just a little voice in my head telling me I was going to score.''
