On transfer deadline day Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha looks set to boost his defensive options - but Celtic have been frustrated in their attempts to lure centre-back Jason Denayer back to Parkhead.

The Ibrox club are are closing in on a one-year loan move for Cardiff full-back Declan John.

The Wales international arrived at the club's Auchenhowie training base on Wednesday night to put the finishing touches on his switch north and will now look to compete with skipper Lee Wallace for the Light Blues left-back slot.

Press Association Sport reports that Caixinha would also like to resurrect his move for Hearts midfielder Jamie Walker but only if the Jambos lower their £1million asking price.

The Ibrox manager failed with three bid back in June and is not prepared to increase his final £600,000 offer, especially as he is confident he will be able to secure the 24-year-old - who has told Tynecastle chiefs he will not be signing a new deal - on a pre-contract come January.

Meanwhile, Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has been frustrated in his attempt to add cover to the centre of his defence after Manchester City youngster Denayer opted to make the switch to Galatasaray.

The Belgium international - who spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Parkhead - was tipped for a return to Glasgow but has decided to head back to Turkey, where he went following his time with Ronny Deila's Hoops.

Rodgers does, however, still have high hopes of landing 19-year-old Paris St Germain striker Odsonne Edouard as he looks to beef up his attacking options while Moussa Dembele continues his recovery from injury.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has been trialling Motherwell frontman Louis Moult for most of the summer but the arrival of Stevie May at Pittodrie looks to have put an end to that chase.

New Hearts manager Craig Levein has confirmed he is hoping to start his rebuilding work at Tynecastle with a couple of late additions, with Genoa striker Manuel Milinkovic one possible target.

Jordan McGhee - who has been linked to Falkirk - could be heading for the exit, as could goalkeeper Viktor Noring after dropping behind rivals Jack Hamilton and Jon McLaughlin.

Hibernian boss Neil Lennon is rumoured to be interested in Forest Green striker Keanu Marsh-Brown but his more pressing concern is staving off Nottingham Forest's interest in John McGinn, after Mark Warburton submitted a second bid for the Scotland midfielder late on Wednesday.

Partick Thistle boss Alan Archibald is also on the hunt for a new full-back after seeing Callum Booth ruled out for three months, while Stephen Robinson fancies adding another defender and wide option to his Motherwell squad - with the former likely to become a more immediate search if Blackburn increase their initial #250,000 bid for Ben Heneghan.

Neil McCann hopes to have solved Dundee's defensive problems after completing the signing of former Athletic Bilbao defender Jon Aurtenetxe on a deal until January but Hamilton, Kilmarnock, Ross County and St Johnstone are unlikely to make any more moves
