Steven Gerrard is set to step away from the race to become the next Rangers manager, according to a report.

The former Ibrox boss has been tipped as one of the frontrunners alongside Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin.

Gerrard spent over three years as Rangers manager - winning the Premiership title in 2021.

The 44-year has since had spells at Aston Villa and Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

The Daily Record__ report the former Liverpool captain is set to step out of the race to return to Govan in what has been described as a 'lifestyle choice'.

It is suggested Gerrard and his wife, Alex, are planning to stay in the Middle East for another 12 months instead of returning to Europe.

The development comes just hours after Dave King told club's new board that the ex-England skipper is the man to take Rangers forward.

He told various outlets: “I'd be very surprised if they haven't spoken to him because Steven is the obvious choice.

“I think I know him well enough to fairly accurately state it would be unfinished business for him.

"Steven left at a time he didn't want to leave. That's a fact. And the team was still top of the league at the time that he left.

“He wanted to defend that title. I think he would have defended the title had he stayed.

“So from Steven's personal point of view and where he is at the moment, I think he'd love nothing more than to come back to the club and take on the challenge of restoring it."
