St Mirren have announced the signing of former Rangers defender Declan John on a short-term deal.

The Welsh international's contract will expire in January 2025.

Capped seven times by Wales, the 29-year-old was most recently with Bolton Wanderers and spent last season on loan at Salford City.

John told the St Mirren website: “I’m absolutely delighted to be here.

“It’s been a crazy few days. I came up on Thursday, trained on Friday and went to watch the game on Saturday which was a great win for the boys. I’ve enjoyed it and I’m really looking forward to getting back into training.

“From walking in, everything has been so positive and you can feel that in the changing room. It feels like a really good place to be.”

Manager Stephen Robinson added: “Declan is here on a short-term deal with a view to extending, depending on how it goes.

“The circumstances we find ourselves in means we’re very short of defence cover. Declan comes in with a vast amount of experience. He’s played at some very high levels and obviously been up in Scotland before as well so we’re very lucky that we’ve been able to get him in."

The Paisley side also confirmed left-back Jaden Brown has left the club by mutual consent.

The 25-year-old admitted three driving offences at Paisley Sheriff Court in October.

Brown is the third player to depart the club in the past month.

Striker Kevin van Veen returned to parent side Groningen after his court appearance on domestic abuse charges.

Defender Shaun Rooney also left by mutual consent after being charged with assault following an incident in a Glasgow takeaway.

Defender Charles Dunne will also be missing for around eight weeks.

St Mirren are currently 6th in the Premiership.
