St Mirren 2 Dundee 1

Danny Mullen struck twice for St Mirren as the Ladbrokes Championship winners celebrated their top-flight return with a 2-1 win over Dundee.

The Buddies were back in the Premiership after a three-year absence and found themselves ahead early thanks to a Mullen header.

Elton Ngwatala levelled up almost immediately but Neil McCann's men blew their chance to take the lead after the break when Sofien Moussa failed to convert from the spot.

And a gaffe from goalkeeper Jack Hamilton cost the Dark Blues dear as Mullen fired home the winner late on to provide new Saints boss Alan Stubbs a winning start.

The mood of optimism generated by last year's league triumph has been allowed to fizzle out somewhat following Jack Ross' departure, with Stubbs' new-look side adding to the concern after stumbling their way into the last 16 of the Betfred Cup after an unconvincing group stage showing.

Yet as the Paisley faithful packed into the Simple Digital Arena to see chairman Gordon Scott hoist the Championship flag before kick-off, their sense of hope was renewed after just nine minutes when the Buddies grabbed the lead.

Right-back Paul McGinn was afforded far too much space down the flank as he threw across a perfect delivery for Mullen to head home the opener.

But Dundee did their best to kill the party atmosphere as they hit back four minutes later. Jack Baird's tackle on Moussa broke to Ngwatala who whipped a perfect strike in off the bottom left-hand post.

Saints almost clicked back into gear midway through the half but Matty Willocks could not direct Kyle Magennis' cross on target.

The visitors blew two golden opportunities at the start of the second period as first Jean Mendy swiped at fresh air with the goal gaping before three players failed to connect with Curran's ball across into the danger zone.

And an even better chance went begging on 58 minutes as Dundee were handed a penalty. Samson was hesitant coming off his line as Mendy raced through on goal and paid the price as he brought the striker down.

But the Saints number one made amends as Moussa stepped up, diving left to push the Tunisian's spot-kick behind.

Hamilton, however, did not have it so lucky as his howler handed St Mirren the winner six minutes from time.

The keeper should have cleared his lines as Ryan Flynn chased in but instead tried to take it round the Saints sub. He was caught out though and looked on in horror as the ball was squared for Mullen to tuck home his second.
