Rangers head coach Russell Martin expects John Souttar to be fit for their European clash with Panathinaikos.

A report this week suggested the defender would be a doubt for their Champions League qualifiers after delaying a minor operation so he could feature for Scotland.

The 28-year old started their defeat to Iceland and sat on the bench a few days later during their win over Liechtenstein.

Souttar and the Rangers medical staff have faced criticism for the decision to hold back on his treatment.

However, new boss Martin has revealed he expects Souttar to be ready for the start of their season.

Martin told Sky Sports: “John wants to play for his country.

“So many players, especially at the end of the season, get lambasted for not going away or pulling out of the international games for whatever reason.

“John made a decision. He had a bit of minor injury, he wanted to go and play because he’s desperate to play for his country which I admire.

“So the plan was here, and everyone was aware of it, to get sorted after that so he has had a minor operation.

“We expect him to be fit for the Panathinaikos game so it hasn’t really affected preparations.

“He has been able to go away and play and then be ready for us”.
