Danny Röhl has pulled out of the race to become Rangers' new head coach.

The 36-year-old impressed the club's hierarchy in his interviews, but has decided to pursue other opportunities.

Former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard turned down the role last week, after holding discussions with the board.

Kevin Muscat is now the favourite to become the next man in charge in Govan.

Muscat is currently in charge of Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League.

Their season ends on 22 November.

Röhl's has only managed one club before, a two-year stint in charge of Sheffield Wednesday.

He arrived at the English Championship side amid financial difficulties and guided them to safety in his first campaign.

The German led the Owls to a 12th-placed finish the following season but departed by mutual consent in the summer of this year.

A highly-rated coach, he has worked at clubs including Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Southampton, and was the assistant manager of the German national team.

The race remains on to replace Russell Martin, who was sacked after winning just five of his 17 matches in charge.

Rangers are eighth in the league table after seven games, nine points behind rivals Celtic and 11 off leaders Hearts.

They host Dundee United on Saturday.
