Hamilton manager Brian Rice believes youngster Andy Winter has all the attributes to be the next star to emerge from the club's famed academy.

The 17 year-old, prolific at youth level, enjoyed a dream debut in Hamilton's emphatic Scottish Cup win over Edinburgh City.

The highly regarded Winter grabbed his first professional goal with a cultured strike on 81 minutes and Winter is tipped to follow in the footsteps of former Hamilton academy stars.

James McCarthy, Eamonn Brophy, Greg Doherty and James McCarthy have all moved to bigger clubs while current prospects, Lewis Smith and Jamie Hamilton, have attracted interest from reputable English sides this season.

''Andy's another young lad who deserves his chance. It doesn't matter what age they are - if I think they're good enough then they'll play,'' Rice said.

The kid's been on the bench the last few weeks and he's been training with the first team for about six weeks which helps to get them battered about the place and get up to speed physically.

He's scored goals at every level he's played at. It's not a gamble for me putting him in as he's got the attributes and the work rate and to score on his debut is a day he'll never forget.''
