Rangers 'lucky' to only lose by two goals, says Giovanni van Bronckhorst
The Ibrox side were defeated by Union SG in the first leg of their Champions League third round qualifier
Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst admits their 2-0 defeat to Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in Champions League qualifying could have been worse.
The Ibrox side have it all to do in the second leg of the third round tie after a disappointing display in Belgium.
Teddy Teuma opened the scoring in the first half before the home side were awarded a contentious penalty.
Connor Goldson was punished for handball following a VAR check with the ball striking his arm after a deflection from close range.
Dante Vanzeir converted from 12 yards to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side an uphill task to get through to the play-off round.
He told Premier Sports: "It was very disappointing. We were a little bit lucky that it was only 2-0 even though the penalty decision - I was surprised he gave a penalty.
"We have so much at stake with all the clubs involved in the competition, you want make the right decisions. We couldn't do anything else with the deflection, with the handball.
"The penalty was given, they scored and the most important thing now is to reflect on our own game because we need to change it around next Tuesday and we need to change it around big time, and the performance needs to be a lot better than we showed today."
A laboured display from Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side continued after the break and a Dante Vanzeir penalty in the 76th minute doubled the Belgian side's lead ahead of the second leg at Ibrox next week.
