Wales international John flew north on Wednesday night for a medical and to be shown around the club's Auchenhowie training base.

He then checked in to Ibrox early on Thursday morning to put the finishing touches on a move that will now see him compete with Rangers skipper Lee Wallace for a starting spot in Pedro Caixinha's line-up.

John has been capped twice for his country but has fallen out of Cardiff boss Neil Warnock's plans.

Ibrox sources have shot down rumours suggesting Rangers are set to offer out-of-favour Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack a return to the club where he started his career.

And Press Association Sport also understands Gers chiefs have not yet returned with a fresh bid for Hearts playmaker Jamie Walker, contrary to reports on Thursday morning.

Caixinha remains keen on a player he tried to sign earlier this summer but is not prepared to meet the Jambos' #1million asking price.

Unless Tynecastle chiefs reduce their valuation, Caixinha is willing to wait until January when he is confident he will land the 24-year-old on a pre-contract.

Meanwhile, new Hearts boss Craig Levein became the first Ladbrokes Premiership manager to complete a deadline-day signing as he landed Raith Rovers captain Ross Callachan on a two-year deal.

The 23-year-old midfielder joins the Jambos for an undisclosed fee and has an option in his contract for his deal to be extended.

However, Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson may have to up his search for a new centre-back if he loses his battle to retain Ben Heneghan.

Well rejected two bids for the defender from Blackburn on Wednesday while Birmingham boss Harry Redknapp is also an admirer. But Press Association Sport understands another Sky Bet Championship club have now entered the fray and are in discussions with Fir Park chiefs.

The good news for Steelmen supporters is that a bid from Oxford for wideman Chris Cadden has been rejected while the club are also optimistic they will be able to keep hold of striker Louis Moult past Thursday's midnight cut-off point.

Robinson has a winger lined up and will also move to sign a defender should Heneghan depart
