Rangers have completed the signing of USA international James Sands.

The 21-year old joins on an 18-month loan from MLS side New York City with the Ibrox side having the option to sign him permanently.

Sands lifted the MLS Cup with his club last year and has also been capped seven times by his country.

The American is a versatile player who is comfortable featuring at centre-back as well as the middle of the park.

A club statement read: "Rangers are today delighted to announce the signing of United States international James Sands from New York City FC on an initial 18-month loan agreement subject to work permit and international clearance. Rangers hold an exclusive option to buy.

"The 21 year-old arrives in Glasgow as a winner, having played in last season’s MLS play-offs which saw NYCFC defeat Portland Timbers to take the MLS Cup for the first time in their history.

""Indeed, he was named as ‘Young Player of the Season’ for NYCFC last season, having been the first ever designated ‘homegrown’ player for the club which was formed in 2013.

"Sands has also been capped seven times already by the US, and played his part in their CONCACAF Gold Cup success in the summer, including playing the entirety of their 1-0 final victory over Mexico.

"A versatile player, Sands can play in midfield and in defence, and arrives in Glasgow ready to further strengthen Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers squad.

"He becomes the latest player from the United States to join Gers and follows in the footsteps of the likes of Claudio Reyna, Maurice Edu and Carlos Bocanegra in wearing both the stars and stripes and the light blue".
