Rangers have announced Danny Röhl as their new head coach.

The appointment of the German ends the club's saga-like search for their next boss.

Former manager Steven Gerrard and ex-player Kevin Muscat were both in advanced talks about returning to Ibrox, only for deals to fall through at a late stage.

Röhl initially impressed the club's hierarchy in his interviews two weeks ago, but pulled out of the race after it was clear he was not first choice.

However, the 36-year-old has now changed his mind after a fresh approach from the club and is confirmed as the successor to Russell Martin.

Martin was sacked in early October after winning just five of his 17 matches in charge.

Röhl has only managed one club before, a two-year stint in charge of Sheffield Wednesday.

He arrived at the English Championship side amid financial difficulties and guided them to safety in his first campaign.

The German led the Owls to a 12th-placed finish the following season but departed by mutual consent in the summer of this year.

A highly-rated coach, he has worked at clubs including Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Southampton, and was the assistant manager of the German national team.

Speaking to the club's website, Röhl said: "It is a huge privilege to be taking on the role of Head Coach at such an incredible club, recognised around the world.

"I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still so much to play for in four competitions, and my staff and I will give it everything to reward the supporters and the club.

"The expectations here are clear. The fans want to see results now - my mentality and experience is to think in exactly the same way and I have belief in the players that we can achieve this.

"We have no time to waste, we start straight away. I respect that trust is earned and understand we have to give the supporters confidence in what we are doing by showing it on the pitch from the start.

"The expectations are huge and I love this challenge because I set high standards for myself and the team too.

"Rangers is built on a tradition of hard work, unity and success - that is exactly what you will get from me and what I want my team to represent for all of you."

Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell added: "Danny has the qualities required to succeed here, allied with being an exceptional coach.

"He has worked in some of the most demanding football environments in the world, where winning is the only expectation, and we believe that background has prepared him for Rangers.

"His job will be to get the best out of the players and build a team that, first and foremost, wins, as we all target success this season."

It is understood that a Scottish coach with Rangers connections will join his backroom staff in the coming days.

Rangers are sixth in the league table after eight games.

They have only won once in the league this season and are 13 points behind leaders Hearts.

Röhl will take charge of Thursday's Europa League game against Brann in Norway.
