Motherwell pay tribute after death of former defender Christian Mbulu
Former Motherwell defender Christian Mbulu has died at the age of 23.
He spent a loan spell at Fir Park in 2018.
The club are leading tributes to him, with chairman Jim McMahon saying: "We are shocked to hear of the news of Christian's death.
"He was such a friendly, pleasant young man who we loved having around Fir Park.
"Our thoughts are with his family during this incredibly difficult time.
"We hope their privacy is respected by everyone as they try to come to terms with their loss.''
Chief executive Alan Burrows added: "For a young man, who had the world ahead of him and who has just become a dad, to be taken so young, is just heartbreaking.
"Despite a number of injury setbacks over his year at Fir Park, he was always positive in his outlook.
"He was a great influence at the club, and always had a smile on his face no matter the setback.
"That's the undying memory that we will have of him."
Having started his carted his career with non-league Brentwood, the centre-back joined Millwall and also had a loan spell at Braintree before joining the Scottish Premiership side.
The Professional Footballers' Association said on Twitter: "Our thoughts are with Christian Mbulu's family and friends at this very sad time.''
