Martin Canning frustrated by 'aggressive' reputation

The Hamilton boss is unhappy at the tag given to his side

Martin Canning is frustrated with Hamilton's growing reputation as one of the league's more aggressive sides.

Hamilton were recently fined £2,500 by the Scottish Football Association for failing to control their players in games against Hearts and Ross County last year.

Ioannis Skondras received a six-match ban (with one suspended) for his role in an altercation against County - he appeared to throw punches at Staggies duo Kenny van der Weg and Chris Routis - and there was a further altercation in the final minutes of their last game against Motherwell, when opposing skipper Paul Hartley was sent off for barging into Dougie Imrie.

Accies have been the club at the centre of attention as the common denominator, but Canning feels his players are being harshly judged,

Regarding Hartley's sending off, Canning said: "It's done with now and I thought our players handled it and reacted very well on the back of the couple before, which I wasn't too chuffed about to be honest.

"You see things such as 'Accies in December bust-ups', when Hearts had three people sent off (a player, manager Craig Levein and his assistant) and we conducted ourselves well to not get involved and the Motherwell game was the same.

"They had a player sent off and we could have reacted stronger than we did and I thought our players did well to get away and calm it down.

"The Ross County game is the one where Ioannis overstepped the mark, but even in that game it's actually a Ross County player who begins it.

"On all three occasions it's 'Accies involved in dust-ups' and it's not the case, we have actually done well to not allow it to become more than it has done.

"It's been four red cards against us and one for us, and we seem to be the ones who have an overly-aggressive attitude and that's not the case.

"You wonder if it sticks, but we have been doing well to keep ourselves away from it apart from one player (Georgios Sarris, whose contract was cancelled) who has been dealt with.'
