Daizen Maeda scores but Japan lose on penalties as Croatia reach quarter final
Old Firm duo Borna Barisic and Josip Juranovic played for the Croats
Celtic's Daizen Maeda gave Japan the lead in their World Cup last 16 match against Croatia but his team could not hold on, as Croatia won on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
Maeda's Hoops team-mate Josip Juranovic played 120 minutes for the Croats, as did Rangers left back Borna Barisic.
Maeda fired in two minutes before the first interval but Tottenham winger Ivan Perisic headed in a second-half equaliser.
Japan missed three of their four penalties in the shoot-out.
Croatia will face Brazil or South Korea in Friday's quarter-final.
Juranovic and Barisic are the SPFL's last remaining representatives in Qatar.
