Kilmarnock striker Kyle Lafferty has been charged by the Scottish FA after allegedly using sectarian language.

The Northern Ireland international could face a lengthy ban after a video of the incident was shared on social media.

The Rugby Park side opened an investigation and Lafferty didn't feature for his country during the international break.

Lafferty has now been charged by the Scottish FA and could face a ban of at least ten matches if found guilty.

The governing body changed rules regarding offensive language behaviour this year - with those found guilty of discriminatory language facing a minimum ban of ten matches.

Speaking about alleged incident, before the SFA charge, Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes said: “Obviously, as the club stated, we are currently in the midst of our own investigation into the matter and in consultation with the SFA we’re trying to get it resolved as quickly as possible.

“I think you can all appreciate that while the investigation is ongoing I’m not allowed to say anything more than that.

“I think it’s always better with these discipline matters to have clarity as quickly as possible, but I think equally it’s important that everyone does their due diligence and does their investigation.

“We’ve done that, we started that last week, and we just need to see the outcome of that.”

A hearing date has been set for Thursday 20 October.
