Kaoru Mitoma has revealed the reasons he turned down Celtic in favour of a move to Brighton.

The Japan international has been one of the breakout stars in the English Premier League this campaign.

He has scored 10 goals in all competitions and has also racked up 7 assists.

The 25-year old has now revealed he was aware of interest from Celtic when Ange Postecoglou first moved to Glasgow - but says it was impossible to turn down a move to the Premier League.

Speaking to Optus Sport, he said: “I was flattered, but also I knew that the Premier League has the highest level of football in the world.

"This was why I accepted Brighton’s offer straight away.

"I did give some time to think about Celtic too, however, my desire to play in the strongest league in the world was very high, as well as my desire to play with and against the best players in the world."

Mitoma could have joined a host of Japanese players who have found success at Celtic Park.

Striker Kyogo has scored 29 goals this season while Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda have also made their mark.

January additions Tomoki Iwata and Yuki Kobayashi also started Sunday's win away to Kilmarnock.
