A football shirt thought to be the most important Scotland jersey to ever go to auction will headline a sale of sporting medals and trophies in Glasgow next month.
Jim Baxter’s match top, that he wore in Scotland’s 3-2 victory over England in 1967, is expected to fetch between £40 and £60,000 when it goes under the hammer on February 3.
The shirt carries huge significance as the game is considered Scotland’s finest ever victory.
'Unofficial World Champions'
Played at Wembley in a European Championship qualifier, the Scots ended England’s unbeaten run of 19 matches, with the result coming under a year after the Three Lions had been crowned World Cup winners in 1966.
The game crowned Scotland as ‘unofficial world champions’.
Baxter, wearing the number six shirt, famously embarrassed the English defence by juggling the ball and appearing untouchable.
Many consider it one of Baxter’s finest ever performances.
‘Slim Jim’ is still regarded one of the nation’s greatest ever players after earning 34 caps and scoring three goals.
He is also a club legend for Rangers, appearing 150 times for them in the 1960’s.
The Jersey
The iconic Scotland shirt has been on display at Ibrox Stadium for the past 10 years but is now being sold by Mark Deighan on behalf of his father Jimmy McGarrity.
McGarrity was gifted the shirt by his friend, the former Chelsea player Alan Hudson, who in turn got it from the England World Cup winner Alan Ball, who had it since the match.
Deighan said: “The jersey has been in our family for over 40 years.
"Unfortunately, my dad has not been well for some time and we decided that the time was right to sell the jersey to help him to do some of the things and see some of the places he has talked about over the years.”
The sale will take place at McTear’s in their Heritage: Important Sporting Medals & Shirt auction on Friday 3rd February.
Previous big football sales at McTear's include Alfie Conn's Rangers 1972 European Cup Winners Cup Jersey (£15,000) and former Celtic great Stevie Chalmers footballing collection (£50,000).
The 'Hand of God' jersey, worn by Diego Maradona in 1986, recently sold for £7,143,500 making it the highest price ever paid for a shirt worn during a sports match.
