Rangers midfielder Emerson Hyndman reckons caretaker manager Graeme Murty deserves praise for stepping into the Ibrox breach.

The Under-20s boss was thrust into the Light Blues' top job in the wake of Mark Warburton's departure.

But it has proved to be a challenging project for the former Reading defender. He presided over Rangers' first away defeat to Dundee in 25 years and also saw the team lose away to Inverness last Friday.

However, with Gers chiefs closing in on a new head coach - with an appointment expected next week - Murty grabbed his first Ladbrokes Premiership win at the third attempt on Wednesday night, with Hyndman delivering the dramatic stoppage-time winner that sealed a 3-2 victory over St Johnstone.

And the on-loan Bournemouth midfielder dedicated his strike to the stand-in boss after insisting Murty should be applauded for the way he has managed the crisis situation.

"He's been brilliant," said the United States international. "It's always a tough position as a kind of interim manager, especially with the way things have went.

"But I credit him for coming in and establishing what he wants us to do. I think the boys got behind him quite well.

"The results didn't really show what he was doing and how good he was but it was nice to give him that positive feeling on Wednesday night."

Victory over Tommy Wright's Saints saw Gers cut Aberdeen's lead to six points in the race for second and Hyndman - who will line up against Hamilton on Saturday when Accies visit Ibrox for a William Hill Scottish Cup quarter-final - insists there is still plenty for the Light Blues to play for this term.

"Of course there is," he said. "We saw the Aberdeen result the other night but we're just focussed on ourselves at the same time.

"We need to get ourselves right and I think we took our first step against Saints. It was about the three points, it wasn't about how we got it.

"After recent results we've had it was very important we got three points on the board and thankfully we did that."
