Daly has made no secret of his desire to take on the head coach role on a long-term basis after stepping into the job following Cathro's abrupt departure.

The 34-year-old has moved up from his role with the under-20s and led Hearts to a 1-0 win over Kilmarnock following an opening-day defeat by Ladbrokes Premiership champions Celtic.

The likes of Dougie Freedman, Steven Pressley, Paul Hartley and Steve McClaren have been linked with the role but Daly is focusing on Saturday's trip to face Rangers.

When asked about his future, the former Rangers forward said: I don't know.

My feelings are fairly clear. I'm delighted to be at the club, whether that's in this role which I'm really enjoying, or at 20s level.

The club will make the right decision as they see fit.

I only know that they're interviewing the candidates and we will just see what happens.

The club will want to make sure that they make the right appointment and don't rush into the decision.

I'm very, very happy to continue in this role for as long as needed and whether that's for the next game, or the next few games, that's not a problem.''

Daly insists Jamie Walker will be available for selection at Ibrox, despite coming up against the club he has been strongly linked to throughout the summer.

Walker has been subject of several bids from Rangers, and was left out of two match-day squads by Cathro and Daly amid concerns over his focus.

However, he returned to the bench against Kilmarnock last weekend, and Daly expects him to be involved at Ibrox.

He has trained really, really well and hard, and is definitely in with a chance of being involved,'' he said.

Jamie has got past the initial frame of mind he was in and is in a great place right now.

We want players of his calibre and quality on the park and hopefully he can show why a club like Rangers are interested in him.''

Meanwhile, midfielder Don Cowie has signed a one-year contract extension.

The club announced the 34-year-old had committed himself until 2019.

The former Scotland international has scored four goals in 57 appearances since joining from Wigan in January 2016
