Giovanni van Bronckhorst thinks Rangers are improving in Europe
The Ibrox side lost 2-0 to Liverpool in their third group stage match
Giovanni van Bronckhorst believes his Rangers side are improving in Europe despite a third consecutive Champions League defeat.
Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners with Allan McGregor preventing a greater margin of victory in a one-sided affair at Anfield.
The 40-year-old former Scotland international was by far the busiest player for the visitors, who even against out-of-sorts opposition struggled to bridge the gulf between the Scottish Premiership and Premier League.
Rangers arrived on Merseyside encouraged by Liverpool's inconsistent form and incoherent defending but Klopp's decision to switch formations in order to solve a mini-crisis of confidence had the desired effect.
They were undoubtedly helped by a team who struggled to retain possession let alone make any progress in the attacking third but were never under the kind of pressure which saw Brighton score three here at the weekend to prompt Klopp's change of plan.
That they did not score more than Trent Alexander-Arnold's free-kick and Mohamed Salah's penalty early in each half owed plenty to McGregor, who made four first-half saves from Darwin Nunez alone.
However, Van Bronckhorst feels performances in Europe are going in the right direction.
He told BT Sport: "It's always frustrating when you lose.
"They started the way we expected, a lot of waves of attacks and fast football. We did reasonably well and it's always harsh to lose a goal from a set piece. We stayed in the game and in the second half we were much better. In those key moments in the end we had some chances especially after the penalty.
"The players showed character and kept going, defending well against set pieces so it was a very positive performance unfortunately the most important thing the result was not.
"It's a level we haven't competed in for many years so I think these games will improve us. Our first three games our development has been positive although the result wasn't. We become better and we will take the experience we have now in to the league, we're two points behind. We have to keep going and it starts again on Saturday at St Mirren."
