Rangers assistant manager Gary McAllister was delighted to see their pre-season work come into practice in their 3-1 friendly win over Welsh champions The New Saints.

He was impressed by their combination play in the training-ground friendly, with goals coming from Finland Under-21 international Serge Atakayi, Jamie Murphy and Ross McCrorie.

Gerrard fielded 22 players, changing the team en masse at half-time, when the score was 1-1 after Andy Halliday saw a penalty saved.

A more experienced team stepped up the play after the break and McAllister was a happy man.

"There were loads of promising little combinations,'' he told Rangers TV.

"You could see little partnerships developing between players in certain areas of the pitch. I'm sue the gaffer will be very pleased with that.

"The players have got to take plaudits because there was some brave play, some nice combinations, one-twos and good efforts on goal.

"Yes, we have worked a lot on short passing and keeping possession and getting efforts on goal, but the players did well.''

Gerrard earlier challenged his players to seize their chance during the pre-season games with Europa League action on the horizon.

The Gers meet Bury in an Ibrox friendly on Friday night before hosting Macedonian side FK Shkupi in their European opener on July 12.

Gerrard said "We haven't got many games before the first qualifier so we'll have to approach this properly and players are playing for places.

"It's competitive and it's an opportunity to put a marker down to me to say, 'I want one of those shirts, one to 11, I want to play.'
