Former Rangers and Scotland captain Eric Caldow dies aged 84
The defender captained Rangers in their first European final in 1961
Former Rangers and Scotland defender Eric Caldow has died at the age of 84.
Born in Cumnock, Caldow made 407 appearances for the club over 13 years, winning five league championships, two Scottish Cups and three league cups.
Caldow played at full back for Rangers and was equally adept on either side, having made his debut in 1953.
He would go on to captain the team and led Rangers to the club's first European final - the Cup Winners' Cup Final in 1961.
On the international stage, Caldow picked up 40 caps, captaining the side on 14 occasions.
On the Rangers club website, chairman Dave King said: "I was profoundly saddened to hear of Eric's passing and I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to his family. Every one of us at the club share their sense of loss.
"Eric truly was a player who could easily be described as heroic and came to epitomise the standards, characteristics and values associated with this club. He was, of course, also a player of international renown with Scotland.
"This is a sad day for the club and the country.'
