Marvin Compper's Celtic misery is over after the German defender joined MSV Duisburg.

The centre-back leaves Celtic after making only one appearance in an 18-month stay.

The 34-year-old joined from RB Leipzig in January 2018 with almost 200 Bundesliga appearances to his name, but 83 minutes of action in a 3-0 Scottish Cup win over Morton proved to be his only appearance.

Compper suffered from fitness problems soon afterwards but was later out of the picture under both Brendan Rodgers and Neil Lennon despite a series of injuries in central defence.

He had a year left on his Celtic contract but has signed for Duisburg on a two-year deal.

His new club are gearing up for life in the third tier of German football after finishing bottom of Bundesliga 2 last season.

Duisburg sporting director Ivo Grlic told the club's official website: "With him, we got exactly the experienced centre-back that I really wanted.

"He is the leading player who perfectly complements our young team with his qualities.

"I talked to him often over a long period of time, and my patience and stubbornness paid off in the end. '
