Cerny hoping for delayed reaction from Fox

Partick Thistle keeper Tomas Cerny knows how Ross County counterpart Scott Fox felt after his blunder against Rangers.

The Staggies number one committed a mortifying gaffe last month when his inexplicable pause allowed Light Blues frontman Alfredo Morelos to pinch the ball from his toe and tap into an empty net.

Cerny had a similar lapse of concentration against Kilmarnock back in March as he let a late Conor Sammon strike slip through his fingers.

The Czech stopper feared his mistake - which allowed Killie to snatch a 1-1 draw - might cost the Jags their place in the top six.

But Cerny responded to his setback in impressive fashion with three displays that helped guarantee Thistle's best league finish in 36 years.

Now the 32-year-old hopes Fox can make a positive recovery of his own - but only after their teams meet in Dingwall on Saturday.

"As a goalkeeper you know how it feels when another goalie makes a mistake," said the former Hamilton and Hibs keeper.

"You'd never wish that to happen to anybody but it's part of the game unfortunately. I'm sure he'll bounce back.

"Everybody deals with these things in their own way but once you play the next game you usually find you're back to your old self.

"I lost a really bad goal last year against Kilmarnock. But I came back from that and probably played the three best games of my season afterwards.

"We beat Ross County, got a point at Celtic then beat Motherwell and those results got us into the top six.

"So looking back it feels like it was a good experience to go through. It was difficult at the time but after that mistake I put in some good performances and I felt it made me stronger.

"Maybe Scott will go through something similar but I just hope he keeps his reaction until next week."

Thistle have their own worries to deal with having kicked off the Ladbrokes Premiership with four straight defeats.

But having bounced back from comparable runs of woe in the past, Cerny knows there is no need to panic.

He said: "It's been a difficult start to the season with the fixtures and the results we've had but we are determined to get our first win against County.

"We have a lot of players who have been in this situation before so we have enough experience to stay calm and win games.

"A couple of years ago it took us nine games before we won a game then last year we hadn't picked up many points before Christmas and were bottom of the league, so we know what pressure feels like.

"Both times we turned it around but that is still not the ideal scenario and you really want to be picking up points early in the season.

"We lost four goals against Aberdeen in our last game but that doesn't really happen that often. We need to go back to basics and what got us to the top six last year was our defensive record and a run of clean sheets.
