Celtic have completed the signing of Canada right back Alistair Johnston from CF Montreal.

The 24-year-old impressed at the World Cup despite his nation losing all of their games.

He signs on a five-year deal for a fee believed to be around €4million.

Celtic have beaten other European clubs to his signature, including Serie A side Bologna.

Johnston told Celtic TV: "I spoke to Ange and knew immediately that I wanted to come to Celtic."

"He’s looking for young, driven players who want to take that next step and compete at the highest level, that was something which just called out to me and it felt right."

The full-back scored four times in 33 league appearances for his club last season and has also been capped 31 times by his country.

Johnston will provide competition for Croatia international Josip Juranovic and the homegrown Anthony Ralston, although there is growing speculation that the former may head for the exit door in January.

The Canadian becomes the Hoops second piece of early January business after they confirmed a deal for Japanese defender Yuki Kobayashi last week.

They sit nine points clear of Rangers at the top of the Premiership.
