Celtic have been linked with a move for Canada international right-back Alistair Johnston.

The 24-year old started as his country ran Belgium close in the World Cup on Wednesday night.

Johnston currently plays his club football for MLS side CF Montreal.

Transfermarkt are now reporting that Celtic are in advanced talks to seal a deal to sign him in the upcoming January transfer window.

Serie A side Bologna had previously been credited with an interest in Johnston.

The full-back has scored four times in 33 league appearances for his club this season and has also been capped 31 times by his country.

Johnston could become Celtic's second piece of early January business with the Hoops confirming a deal for Japanese defender Yuki Kobayashi on Wednesday.

The 22-year has signed a five-year deal after leaving Vissel Kobe.

Kobayashi is a central defender who has featured for his club side in Japan's top flight and the AFC Champions League.

He has also played for Japan's youth sides at international level.
