Celtic, Aberdeen and Partick Thistle handed SPFL sanctions

Published 7th Aug 2025

The SPFL has handed down disciplinary measures to Aberdeen, Celtic, and Partick Thistle after supporters were found guilty of “unacceptable conduct” at matches late last season.

The clubs breached league rules following large-scale pyrotechnic displays during three separate fixtures, while Thistle’s case also involved a pitch invasion that halted play.

Celtic have been punished for pyrotechnic displays in the north-east corner of Celtic Park during their final Premiership game of the season at home to St Mirren on May 17.

It has resulted in a suspended reduction of 200 tickets in the affected area for a future home matches which would be triggered by any repeat offence before June 30, 2026.

Aberdeen received an identical suspended sanction for pyrotechnics at Pittodrie, which disrupted Sky Sports’ live broadcast due to thick smoke.

Partick Thistle have been sanctioned more heavily following pyrotechnic use and a pitch invasion during their promotion play-off tie at Somerset Park.

The club faces a suspended closure of a stand or section at Firhill if similar incidents occur before June 2026.

Health and safety concerns, match delays, and disruption to fans have been noted as key factors in the disciplinary action.

The governing body also say the clubs failed to identify or take proportionate disciplinary measures against the supporters responsible.
