Brown backs Celtic team-mate McGregor to win back Scotland place

Skipper Scott Brown has backed his Celtic team-mate Callum McGregor to battle his way back into Gordon Strachan's Scotland plans.

The in-form midfielder was something of a surprise omission from Strachan's squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying double-header against Lithuania and Malta.

His fellow Celtic players Brown, Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney, Stuart Armstrong, James Forrest and Leigh Griffiths were all included.

McGregor, 24, is as yet uncapped and has not been in a Scotland squad since September 2014, when he was called up for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Germany.

Ahead of the second leg of Celtic's Champions League play-off against Astana in Kazakhstan, where the Scottish champions boast a 5-0 lead from the first game, Brown said of his colleague: He has been fantastic for us.

Especially this season - he has started really well, scoring goals, creating chances and working hard.

Callum will keep fighting and keep showing Gordon how good a player he is over the next couple of months and he will be fighting to get into the next squad.'
