Ayr United allowed to sell alcohol during Premier Sports Cup trial
Ayr United fans will be allowed to purchase alcohol at two upcoming matches as part of a trial initiative.
South Ayrshire Council has approved licences for their first two home fixtures in the Premier Sports Cup against Arbroath and Forfar.
A ban was introduced in 1981 following riots at the previous year’s Scottish Cup final.
Since then, regular supporters have been unable to buy booze at matches in Scotland.
A club statement revealed up to 66 supporters who purchase £35 tickets will be granted entry through a designated gate and allowed to consume up to four pints of Birra Moretti before kick-off, plus one more at half-time.
This will take place in a specific area of the Main Stand accessible only to home fans.
However, current regulations mean that fans will not be able to see the pitch while in the designated drinking area.
SNP MSP George Adam's is welcoming the pilot and hopes the blanket ban will be lifted.
He told Clyde 1 News: "It is a step in the right direction to have this pilot.
"This model could be an example for others to look at the data and take it from there.
"I think each club will be different and do it a different way.
"As long as it is safe and everyone can enjoy a couple of drinks at the football - that is the most important thing for me.
"I'd encourage all clubs to look at it. Every club is looking to maximise income so I think it's important other clubs get this opportunity as well".
