A total of 23 players featured in defeat by Costa Rica and victory over Hungary after McLeish named an experimental squad.

With experienced players hoping to get back into the frame, McLeish has a range of options available.

Goalkeeper

McLeish opted for a safe approach in Allan McGregor as he decided not to hand Jon McLaughlin or Jordan Archer an international debut. The 36-year-old turned in an excellent performance in Hungary after having little to do against Costa Rica following the only goal. Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon is likely to be fit for the UEFA Nations League campaign as he fights back from a knee injury and McGregor's chances of keeping the jersey could hinge on his club future after his Hull contract expires.

Centre-backs

McLeish has unearthed two promising prospects in a position which Scotland have recently struggled to fill. Scott McKenna took to international football well in his breakthrough season with Aberdeen while 22-year-old Celtic defender Jack Hendry took advantage of injuries to Russell Martin and Grant Hanley to deliver an assured debut in Budapest. Christophe Berra was unfortunate to miss out and the 33-year-old is determined to get back in, but Kieran Tierney appears to be earmarked for a role in the left side of a three-man central defence. Charlie Mulgrew is well-placed after skippering the Scots while McLeish also has the likes of Leeds captain Liam Cooper, Hearts defender John Souttar and Barnsley's Liam Lindsay pushing.

Wing-backs

Andy Robertson started both games and looks to be in control of the left flank, although Barry Douglas was handed a debut off the bench in Hungary. With Tierney another obvious option, McLeish has no problems filling that role. The right side offers more of a quandary. Callum Paterson started there against Costa Rica but has been playing in a central role for Cardiff. Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser was given the task in Hungary and delivered the assist for Matt Phillips' only goal. Ikechi Anya's international days could be numbered as one of Gordon Strachan's favourites struggles for game time with Derby.

Midfield

Stuart Armstrong, John McGinn and Callum McGregor boosted their prospects with a dominant display in Budapest. The raw Scott McTominay had previously given an encouraging and lively debut against Costa Rica. With 34-year-old Darren Fletcher on the fringes at Stoke and Scott Brown retired from international duty, places are up for grabs. James McArthur is still playing regularly for Crystal Palace while Barry Bannan was unavailable through injury. Fulham pair Kevin McDonald and Tom Cairney did not seize their chance against Costa Rica while Matt Ritchie was hit and miss, and Kenny McLean, Ryan Christie and Jamie Murphy had to settle for cameos. Robert Snodgrass missed out but his Aston Villa form could see him remain in McLeish's long-term plans.

Strikers

Phillips showed he could potentially be converted from a wide role with a hard-working display capped by the winner against Hungary. The West Brom player grew into the centre-forward role with support from James Forrest. Oli McBurnie showed enough against Costa Rica to suggest he has an international future, while Jason Cummings needs consistent club starts. Of Strachan's four stalwarts up front, Leigh Griffiths and Steven Fletcher were injured, while Steven Naismith and Chris Martin only have two goals each this season
