The 27-year-old has previously played in the Scottish top flight for Inverness CT and has been capped by Scotland at Under-19 level.
Aldred said: "I am really looking forward to it, to getting my head down, working hard and being the best I can be for the football club.
"Playing in the Scottish Premiership was something I was really interested in. I'm looking forward to getting going."
The central defender's career began at Carlisle United in 2008, before moving to Watford in the English Championship in 2010 on a two year deal.
Aldred failed to make a first team appearance for Watford and after loan spells with Stockport County and Inverness CT moved to Colchester United in 2011.
Further loans followed at Torguay United and Barrow, before a permanent transfer to Accrington Stanley in 2012. He made 94 appearances for the League Two side before moving back to the English Championship with Blackpool.
He spent three years with the Seasiders, and captained the side to their League Two play-off final victory last season.
Aldred then moved to Lee Clark's Bury in the summer and made 23 appearances for the former Kilmarnock boss before the loan move to Fir Park.
Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson said: "We were clear from the start of the January window we were looking to increase our options in central defence.
"Tom ticks that box and arrives at the club with plenty experience under his belt.
"We tried to get him in the summer, so we are delighted to finally have him at Motherwell."
