Alan Stubbs looking to beef up St Mirren squad

The physicality of the Buddies side had been questioned last season

St Mirren boss Alan Stubbs is hoping to add physicality to his team after the arrival of Alfie Jones from Southampton.

The 6ft-plus midfielder, who can also play in defence, signed on loan on from Southampton on Wednesday and will add power to the Premiership newcomers.

The Buddies take on Aberdeen in the League Cup on Saturday looking to show they have improved since a 4-1 cup defeat at Pittodrie in January, when the physical difference between the teams was noted.

Stubbs admits the issue is in his mind as he looks to spend some of the windfall received from former Buddies midfielder John McGinn's move from Hibernian to Aston Villa.

Stubbs said: "I think it's something that is ongoing. We are aware of it and we are trying to make us stronger in that department. But we have still got just over two weeks of the window left and we are still looking to strengthen the squad.

"I still think there will be players coming in. There may be a couple leaving as well. While the window is still open, in football anything is possible.'
