The Jags boss was surprised by the damaging 4-0 defeat by relegation rivals Ross County in Dingwall on Tuesday night which left his side bottom of the table behind the Staggies on goal difference.

The Maryhill men are now without a victory in nine matches - eight in the league - as they prepare to welcome in-form Kilmarnock to Firhill on Saturday.

And in the wake of the costly capitulation against County, Archibald stressed the need for action rather than analysis.

"It was very surprising when we knew what was at stake against our closest rivals at the bottom end of the league,'' said Archibald.

"It was the manner of the result which was the hardest thing to take. It was a long, sore bus journey down the road.

"We spoke about it after the game, we spoke about it again this morning and analysed it as well as but at this time of the season you can't keep on going over and over and over.

"We know the situation we are in and we have to act on it before it is too late.

"We have been here before and we have players that care, they do care.

"It might not show that because we lost so heavily the other night but there is a care there and if we can get the right balance at both ends of the pitch then we have enough there to get ourselves out of trouble.

"We have to defend better first and foremost.

"We knew the first goal was going to be vital and that plays a big part and our mind-set has got to be better, we have to stick together as well and do our own jobs better.

"The other night some players tried to fix things that weren't their concern rather than just getting their own position in order.

"The good thing in football is we have a game so quickly to try to put it right and if we can get a reaction from the players in Saturday, which we hope we are going to get, three points can hopefully turn it around.'
