Team Scotland Stretches Medal Tally
Team Scotland stretched its medal tally to 43 today, including a gold for gymnast Daniel Keatings. Mr Keatings put his London 2012 heartbreak behind him by winning gold on the pommel horse, producing a stunning routine in front of his home crowd. Scotland poster girl Eilidh Child was unable to give Hampden Park the athletics victory it craved above all others, but still claimed silver in the 400 metres hurdles. She was beaten to the title by Jamaican favourite Kaliese Spencer. Ms Child, whose pictures are plastered on billboards across the city, was greeted by deafening cheers from a packed crowd amid a sea of Saltires inside the national stadium. She and Spencer both went off hard, but it was the latter who had established a clear lead coming into the home straight and Child could not close the gap. Ms Child said: I put down a really good race, I stepped off that track knowing I had given it everything and I'm just delighted to come away with a silver medal."
I knew if I executed my race right I could come away with a medal, I didn't know which colour." I knew I would have to be on my A game to beat Kaliese and she ran faster than my best there so I think the right lady won, but I'm just so happy with how I ran."
I'm so happy. I think I said after the Olympics I came off thinking I could have done more. I came off that line and my legs were gone, they were gone at that finishing line, I couldn't give any more." I put on a good performance. It was not enough for gold, but I will cherish my silver medal. That's one of my best moments ever.'' The accolade won by Shetland schoolgirl Erraid Davies, 13, of the Commonwealth's youngest medal winner, survived the challenge from English diver Victoria Vincent who failed to pick up a medal today. Erraid won Commonwealth hearts on Sunday by taking bronze in the women's para-sport 100m breaststroke SB9 final. London-born Victoria, who is also 13 but is nearly two months younger than Erraid, scored a creditable 10th-place finish in the 10m diving tonight, just behind England teammate Sarah Barrow. Vincent is now looking forward to a bright future, saying:
It was close to my PB. I could have dived better but at the end of the day I'm at the Commonwealth Games at the age of 13." The degree of difficulty of the dives I was doing meant I couldn't do much better but hopefully I will be learning harder dives."
The Olympics is my dream, but we will just have to wait and see if I can make it that far.'' Louise Martin, chair of Sportscotland, said: To move on to 43 medals is another fantastic milestone for Team Scotland, and with three more days of competition still to come I can't wait to see how many more we can add to the tally."
Daniel Keatings produced a faultless routine on the pommel horse to take gold, while Eilidh Child performed magnificently in front of a vocal home crowd at Hampden to take silver in the 400 metres hurdles. The bronze medals from Daniel Purvis on the rings and wrestler Alex Gladkov meant it was four medals for Team Scotland on another successful day at the Games.''
