Scots Celebrate 'Fantastic' Day
Team Scotland celebrated a fantastic'' day as it smashed its previous Commonwealth Games medals record with five days still to go. The host nation broke its previous record when the men's gymnastics team won silver at the Hydro. Scotland secured four medals today taking the total to 37, surpassing the 33 won at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986. The men's gymnastics team took the host nation's first medal of the day when they achieved silver at the Hydro, smashing the previous record of 33. Later Jen McIntosh took silver in the women's 50 metres rifle shooting at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre in Carnoustie, Angus. McIntosh, 23, was thrilled with her performance which makes her Scotland's most successful female Commonwealth Games competitor with five medals, having also won three in Delhi four years ago. It also took her past mother Shirley, who won four shooting medals in 1994 and 1998. She said: ''That's an incredible accolade to have at 23. And it's about time Mum's record went!" ''The whole Scotland team has been absolutely fantastic. It's our biggest team and the best prepared team we have ever had." ''We came here to break records and that's what we've done. And for me personally it's pretty special. It was one of the most exciting experiences of my life.'' This evening Daniel Wallace secured another silver for Scotland as he came second in the men's 200m individual medley at Tollcross, claiming his third medal of the Games. Wallace, who took gold in the 400m and silver in the 4x200 freestyle relay, followed his Braveheart-style celebration by entering the arena wearing a kilt before stripping to his trunks. He said: ''It feels phenomenal to have won another medal." ''I didn't expect to do that well last week, but after what happened I knew I had it in me to get a medal, and I'm just so happy I did that today. ''Wearing the kilt was a bit of a team decision. With us being the home nation, we wanted to show our pride off. It was a little special thing for the fans. I hope they enjoyed it." ''We said, 'Let's step our game up on the last night'. ''Performance-wise I think I did that and the emotions I had when I was walking out were amazing. The crowd were amazing, they stepped their game up too. It's something I will never forget. ''This is the best competition I've been to ever in my life. I don't think anything will ever top this.'' Over at Hampden Park, Mark Dry took bronze for Scotland in the men's hammer throw. Mike Whittingham, Director of High Performance at sportscotland institute of sport, said:
It's been another day of fantastic achievement for Team Scotland. With our male gymnasts winning Scotland's first ever team gymnastics medal and Jen McIntosh becoming our most prolific woman in Commonwealth Games history with her fifth medal, the record books are being rewritten on a daily basis. Dan Wallace's medal today also means that our medal total from the pool has reached double figures, a quite staggering return. And Mark Dry's bronze in the hammer as darkness fell was the icing on the cake."
With 37 medals reached on day six, Team Scotland have already exceeded expectations and sit near the top of the medals table - long may it continue.''
