Scotland Sails Past Medals Tally

Scotland has surpassed its record for Commonwealth Games gold medals after a glittering fifth day of success. The host nation now has 13 golds, ahead of the 11 medals it won at Melbourne in 2006. The two golds and a bronze mean that Scotland has now equalled its record of 33 medals at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1986. Alex Marshall and Paul Foster tipped the balance when they won the lawn bowl pairs final today. They handed Scotland their first Commonwealth Games bowls gold in eight years as they beat Malaysia 20-3 in the pair's final at Kelvingrove. The triumph is Marshall's third Commonwealth title after pairs victories in 2002 and 2006 but he said winning in front of a home crowd was his biggest achievement to date. Paul told our reporter Collette Cullen it was a proud moment:

Alex says the home crowd gave him that extra boost:

Later Libby Clegg secured Scotland's first athletics gold of these Commonwealth Games with a T11/12 100 metres victory at a raucous Hampden Park. The visually-impaired 24-year-old and guide Mikail Huggins was roared over the line by the partisan crowd in a world-leading 12.20 seconds. She said: ''It feels incredible. It was an absolutely fantastic experience. I loved every second of it. The crowd were just phenomenal." "The cheers they were giving us were just amazing and really uplifting. It definitely helped my performance." ''It is completely different from the Paralympics or the World Championships." Just the amount of support we have got from everyone has just been unbelievable, really. I don't know how else I can describe it.'' The only dampener on the evening was the fact that guide Huggins does not get a gold medal as well. Clegg said: ''It is a slight disappointment for me, but he'll be on the podium with me as always." ''It is just one of those things. We can't change it.Jen McIntosh was unable to retain her Commonwealth title in the women's 50m rifle prone but she did earn Scotland a third shooting medal with a bronze. Louise Martin, chair of sportscotland said:It's been yet another fantastic day for Team Scotland with a historic 12th and 13th gold medal as well as a bronze - equalling our best-ever medal haul at a Commonwealth Games." To be in this position after only five days of competition is simply phenomenal. All the work done by experts at the sportscotland institute of sport, the Team Scotland support staff, and coaches ensured the team was the best ever prepared for a Commonwealth Games, but it is still down to every individual athlete to go out and perform to their best on the day."The performances have been incredible, so it is a big 'well done' to all of the medallists so far. We now look forward to seeing the action unfold over the remaining six days of competition - and to cheering on our athletes to a new record for Team Scotland.'' However Scotland suffered disappointment in the pool at Tollcross International Swimming Centre today, where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry watched the action. The host country did not secure any medals despite having representatives in five finals at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, including Ross Murdoch and Hannah Miley who have both won a gold and a bronze each at Glasgow 2014. Scotland is placed third in the medal table which is led by Australia who have 87 medals. England are in second place with 74.
