More than 600 reports of incidents where women felt unsafe in Glasgow have been logged via an online map since December.

Female victims of violence, harassment and abuse in public places have been recording their experiences on an interactive “heat map” to improve women’s safety in Glasgow.

Women were asked to pinpoint places where they feel most vulnerable or have faced harassment and abuse in an interactive map of the city.

Reported incidents include being dragged from cars by men while parking, and indecent exposure, even in daylight. A website that allows specific areas of concern to be highlighted has revealed that women feel so unsafe that they hold keys between their knuckles for protection.

Recalling an attack on Beith Street in Partick, one woman said: “I worry these men will take out their anger on the next female they come across who is on her own.”

Posting about Queen’s Park, another said: “There are common reports of men exposing themselves to women even in daylight.”

One woman claimed that while on a late bus home in the Shawlands area a man was deliberately pressing himself against her, and because of how busy the bus was she could not move away from him.

It is hoped the project from Wise Women along with Glasgow Girls Club will help drive cultural change in the city.

The app is no longer open for contributions. The information collected will be gathered together and presented to the Women's Safety working group on Glasgow City Council.
